Advice on Picking Baby Middle Names

Naming your baby is really exciting and fun. But if you're like most expecting parents, you mostly think about the first name. Baby middle names are the forgotten name, the neglected name, the name that many parents throw in almost as an afterthought.

Well on this website we're going to give that middle name the love and attention it deserves! And if you're here you probably think that picking out a good middle name for your baby is pretty important too.

So how exactly do you pick a good middle name? Here are several good ideas to try out:

-Once you've picked the first name, use the runner-up for the middle name.

-Compromise: if you and your spouse disagree on what the first name should be, use them both: one as the first name, one as a second name.

-If you've got a list of favorite names, try putting different combinations together. Keep combining until you find one that sounds good together and that you like. You might find it helpful to write each name on a small piece of paper and shuffling them around to come up with the combinations.

-Recognize someone: if you have someone that's been a great friend or really important in your life, using their name for your baby's middle name is a great way of saying thanks.

-Follow tradition: Does your family have a tradition of making the first boy's middle name the same as the husband's father? Is the first girl's middle name always the first name of the mother? Look through your family history to see how it's been done before.

Here are some important things to consider when picking the middle name:

-What will the initials spell? What sounds like a good name can quickly fall apart if the initials spell PIG or FAT. Your child will appreciate you thinking ahead so they don't get beat up at school!

-Do all the names sound good together? Sometimes names that sound great to you all by themselves just don't sound right when you put them all together. Say them outloud and see what you think. Does it have that "ring" to it, or does it just sound all wrong?

Good luck to you! Try these ideas out so you can pick out perfect baby middle names.
